More than one-third of the people we serve are under 18. Read on to learn how fresh food, hands-on learning, and a little time in the garden are helping them thrive.
Every kid deserves the chance to crunch into a fresh carrot, discover their new favorite fruit, and learn where our food comes from.
Concrete Jungle helps make that possible by working with schools, early learning centers, youth-focused nonprofits, shelters, and other community partners to bring fresh produce straight to our young neighbors and their families.
Whether it’s an after-school fruit and veggie market powered by our Produce Buyers Club, a hands-on PEEL nutrition demonstration, or a day digging in at Doghead Farm in Southwest Atlanta, we’re helping kids build healthy habits that can last a lifetime.
Concrete Jungle’s school produce distributions make it easy for families to bring home fresh fruits and vegetables, meeting our neighbors where they are and making healthy food more accessible.
Our PEEL (Produce Education & Enjoyment Loop) demos spark curiosity by giving kids and families the chance to try new produce, learn easy ways to prepare it, and discover that healthy food can be delicious, too!
At our Doghead Farm in Southwest Atlanta, young volunteers get their hands dirty growing food, caring for the land, and seeing firsthand how a tiny seed can become a meal on someone’s table. Along the way, they’re learning where food comes from, building new skills, and having plenty of fun outdoors.
Why this work matters:
- 1 in 5 Georgia children face hunger, according to Feeding America. Too many kids across Georgia don’t have consistent access to the nutritious food they need to thrive.
- Full bellies make a difference. Fresh, nourishing food gives kids the energy to learn, play, and simply be kids.
- Healthy food fuels learning. When children have access to nutritious meals, they’re better equipped to focus, grow, and succeed in school.
- Good habits start early. Positive experiences with fresh fruits and vegetables can spark curiosity, build confidence, and encourage healthy eating habits that last a lifetime.
Whether we’re sharing fresh produce, introducing kids to new flavors, or inviting young people into the garden, every experience helps build healthier habits, stronger communities, and a lifelong appreciation for fresh food.
“I saw dozens of students and their parents come through the market and receive many kinds of produce that they can integrate into healthy meals at home. Seeing kids interact with fresh produce in a positive way is something you don’t see very often. To see kids with that level of attention after a full day of school was pretty inspiring.”

Fresh fruits and vegetables should be a normal part of childhood, not a luxury.
As a part of our Concrete Jungle community, you’re helping young neighbors and their families bring home healthy food, discover new fruits and veggies, and learn skills that nourish them for years to come. Thank you!
